DUO Multi Factored Authentication(MFA) Help - Questions and Answers

I do not have a cell phone. How do I use DUO?

You have a few options. First you need to add a phone to setup your account. It would be best if it can recieve texts. You have options to create a free text phone number online if you would like. That will be part 2 of this. If you do not want to create a a free sms account then you will need to get one time codes from the university helpdesk during normal business hours (M-F 8-5). These codes expire after 60 minutes of being issued. SMS message codes are one time use and do not expire and you get a batch of 5 each time. These could be printed and kept in your wallet. Just cross off the ones you use.

How do I create a free SMS messaging account?

There are a few free options for sms messaging. Ask your friend what one they use. Here are a few below.

Can I use a family members phone?

Yes you can. This is not ideal, but we have validated that more than one account can be tied to a single device.

Do I really need to use MFA each time I log in?

No you do not. You can trust a device, it is cookie based for each browser, for 365 days. Check the box to remember your device if you do not want to do it each time on that device. You also will likely not have to use it when on a trusted network. 

Help, I can not check remember my device?

You likely configured your DUO MFA to automatically send a duo push. You have to cancel out of the duo push that was sent. Once cancelled you can check the box. You will have to accept the prior push or wait 1 minute before sending another push. If you try it will give you an error saying you need to wait up to a minute.

I am running iOS 8 (or lower) and I am not able to install the current version of Duo Mobile from the App Store on my device.

The minimum supported operating system version for Duo Mobile 3.17.0 and above is iOS 9. Users installing Duo Mobile for the first time with devices running iOS versions below 9 need to download Duo Mobile 3.16.7 from the App Store using the iTunes application on a Mac or PC computer. You must be signed in with the same iTunes account you plan to use with your phone.

When the download is complete, open the App Store on your iOS 6, 7, or 8 device, and install Duo Mobile. You will be prompted with an alert informing you will receive the latest compatible version of Duo Mobile (3.16.7).

I have changed mobile phones since I first setup DUO and now I can't get a "Push Notification". What should I do?

I don't have a mobile phone or tablet how can I get past DUO?

Contact the Help Desk at 808-675-3211 or email help@byuh.edu to request a bypass code.  Bypass codes can be used only once and have to be used to log in within 60 minutes after created.  You can use the "Remember me for 365 days" setting so you don't have to keep getting bypass codes every time you log in.

I had a mobile phone while on campus but am back in my home country and the phone doesn't work.  How can I can I get past DUO?

If you have a mobile phone or tablet that has WiFi available you can set up DUO using the tablet option instead of the mobile phone option.  If you are using the same device you previously had DUO set up on contact the Help Desk at 808-675-3211 or email help@byuh.edu to remove your previous device then set up your device with the tablet option. If you don't have a mobile phone or tablet see instructions above.

I don't get the prompt to Start Setup what can I do?

Log out of your program and restart the browser.  Make sure all tabs and windows of your browser are closed before trying to open the browser back up. Log in again and you should get the prompt to start setup.

Why won't my browser "Remember me for 365 days"?

How do I add a new phone with the same number?

* If automatic push is enabled, you will need to cancel and register your new device. You should be able to send a text to the same phone number you had before or get a code from the helpdesk. 


Click on "My Settings and Devices" on the left hand menu and you will receive another request to "Send Me a Push"

Click "Device Options"

Click "Reactivate Duo Mobile" and follow the instructions to add your phone information
